My own nightmarish personal experience has led me to want to create work aiming towards raising the awareness of precious people.
Artwork is a way for me to verbalize through the variety of mediums for what I cannot say without stammering orally about the residual memories I grasped tightly to finally let loose with sentiment into the wonderful exchange of making. The works are cathartic for me, and hopefully like dream catchers, strong, and able to shield one from the shattering of dreams. I want my artwork to address many of the yin-yang universal human experiences and to exude nurture, caution, and care for the future.
I look to culturally varied artists, yet each uniquely expressive of their experiences and emotional sentimentalities attached.
I am drawn to artists who shared not the pristine side of just joy, or other positive life aspects. Rather I look to how they shared their guttural reactions to such things as love, the hardships of love and love relationships, the deeply built-in human feelings of maternal, and even, paternal needs to nurture.
One of my art heroes is down to earth quite genius, Thornton Dial, who commented on his own life perspective as being impressed with the exposure to a life surrounded by strong women. In one of his collage paintings he makes a courageous warriors call to alert his viewers of his own personal grief mournfully touched by the heart wrenching loss of so many precious children attending their tragic Twin Towers deathly daycare shortly after the 9/11 American terrorist incident.
Frieda Kahlo said she painted her own reality, though many viewers interpreted her paintings as dreamy surreal nightmares or daydreams. Tracy Emin put her very private life beyond the bedroom walls on display. Cindy Sherman showed a woman, an artist, a tragic heroine, whomever she pleased to be she could through her own expression.
Emanating a strong perseverance and supporting my audience with the bravado of hope in these surreal theaters and with no worry of the interpretation(s) from the viewers. No. Rather this. Look. Look again. Stop. Just ponder and get lost in a moment recalled or not……….float in the presence of now.
